Portfolio of the Week: Duminda - Winner of our second design competition!

When our Urban Oasis design competition ended, we were curious about the man behind the winning design. We guess you want to know more about him too. Ladies and Gentlemen, we present Duminda, winner of the Urban Oasisdesign competition!

Q: As an out-an-out creative person, what do you like most about MINISpace?

A: Mainly the concept I would say. I like the changing back ground. Every time you log on you experience a different environment on your browser. Or you can flip through the backgrounds until you find one you like. As a designer I like the aesthetic of a lot of simple black and white with bright high lights. MINISpace has that and I can't take my eyes off that neon yellow color... Love it!

Q: Your User-Picture is quite interesting: DP. That's one of your own designs?

A: All the designs on my portfolio are original ideas. I am inspired by everything I see in daily life. I did many logo designs for my own branding but finally ended up with this one. In the original design there was no box around it but I made to match with mini space with the black and white box shape with the "DP" logo inside.

Q:
You describe your professional expertise in your user-profile. But we also want to know about you as a person. How would you describe yourself? What are your favorite things to do in life?

A: I am a Sri Lankan who lives and work as Art Director/ Web Designer in Milano Italy. I have a traditional graphic design background; my Primary and secondary education was completed at Carey College Colombo and I got a diploma in DTP, then got a MSc - IT at Keele University in the UK. However, during my first stint in the industry, I was more or less hurled in to the big, wide world of Web. Working with various web development companies, I've collaborated on numerous client projects ranging from little brochure-ware sites to mega-budget labyrinths.
In the future, I want to do my own web design company, and push my art skills, and get better at digital art and painting... I'm really looking forward to some time for myself and family. Maybe go back to my home-land and relax on the beach on weekends.

Q: I just saw that you've already signed up for the next round of the design competition. Are you hoping to win again, or is it just for fun?

A: Not exactly to win again, I thought I'd do some more design and be in touch with the people who are competing and watching, I love to get lots of comments for my work anyways, and it's fun to see something new on the site every day.

Q:
In your opinion what should a winning design look like? Any hints for the other participants?

A: I don't think there is a moment that you say to yourself, wow, I'm talented. You will know by the feedback you get on your work - if those you respect criticize you, I think it's easier to find out that you have a not-so-great design. For example another MINISpace user critiqued one of my images by saying. "It's better to have a photograph with no graphics at all than one with bad graphics." Ouch! But it guided me in the right direction.

Q:
What would you like to discuss about with the MINISpace Users? Any topic you want to push on MINISpace?

A: More opportunity for community members and creatives to network and generate more business for themselves and each other. An even larger spread of the latest design trends and methodologies.
